Shingles is a disease caused by the varicella - zoster virus which can cause chickenpox.
The area most commonly affected is around the abdomen. Even though most adults have had chicken pox, the virus stays for life dormant in the spinal cord or nerve ganglia until activated by a weakened immune system.
An attack is usually preceded by three or four days of chills, fever and aches then crops of tiny water filled blisters appear.
Scratching or rubbing is not advised as this can cause secondary infections.
